Obituary for Joyce Victoria Currey

Joyce Victoria Currey was born January 9, 1927, in La Ceiba, Honduras. She was the fourth of
ten children to the parents of the late Hamilton & Elizabeth Rich. Young Joyce had a drive and
passion for life. It was this drive that led her to the United States in 1955, pursuing the
“American Dream”. She first settled in Chicago, IL for a couple years before venturing to New
York City. Joyce spent most of her adult years working various jobs as a domestic and as a
Mental Hygiene Therapy Aide at the Brooklyn Development Center (BDC). Joyce was a
dedicated employee at the BDC where she was employed for over twenty years. During her
time at BDC, Joyce impacted the lives of many encouraging them to rise above life’s obstacles.
While employed she earned several awards and honors including her High School diploma. She
also served as a union delegate for Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA). Joyce was very
ambitious and accomplished a major goal when she became a home-owner in 1984. She was a
proud member of the Nehemiah Homeowners Association where she empowered others to be
homeowners. Joyce obtained great faith and was grateful to God for all she was able to
accomplish in life. She was a member of St. Paul’s Baptist Church in Brooklyn NY, under the
leadership of Pastor Johnny Ray Youngblood.
Joyce was the proud mother to three handsome sons Errol, Robert and Ken. Her sons were the
apple of her eye. Her love for them exemplified the true heart of a Mother. Joyce enjoyed
spending time with her family, watching her favorite televisions shows and soap operas and
