Obituary for Julia Evans
Julia Sarah Evans was born June 5, 1929 in South Hill, Virginia, in the county of
Mackenburg, Virginia to the late Mary and Benjamin Evans. Julia attended M.M.
Booker elementary and high school in South Hill, Virginia. Julia was the youngest
and last living sibling of 15 children. She had one son, Gregory Evans, who preceded
her in death. Julia later journeyed to Brooklyn, New York. Upon her relocating, she
joined Cornerstone Baptist Church. After her departure from Cornerstone, she joined
Christ Fellowship Baptist church, under the leadership of Reverend Dr. David Kelly
II. For a short period of time, she was a member of Apostle R.L. Jackson's church
until she visited Pastor Bernard Taylor and the Open Door C.O.G.I.C. Julia then
joined Pastor Taylor in fellowship and became a member of the choir for many years
until she transitioned to be with God.
While in her prime, Julia became interested in nursing. She received her first
Practical Nurse certificate on January 20, 1951. In June of 1970, she received her
Associates degree from New York City Community College. She went on to further
her education by attending Central School for Practical Nurses, where she received
another Practical Nurse certification. Due to her love of education, she attended The
University of the State of New York and graduated on September 21, 1971,
registered as a Registered Practical Nurse. Julia, never tired of learning, went on to
continue her education at Hunter College on January 14, 1973, where she received
her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, as a Registered Nurse.
Julia was a woman who committed herself to helping and caring for others. In 1978,
she was an emergency room nurse at Green Point Hospital in Brooklyn. That same
year, she moved on to work as a private duty nurse at Jewish Hospital and Medical
Center of Brooklyn. After leaving Jewish Hospital and Medical Center, she moved
to Concord Nursing Home in the capacity of a Registered Nurse Supervisor.
Julia was known for her gift of singing. She was very theatrical and loved to share
her voice with others. She sang on several choirs in her lifetime. One of her biggest
accomplishments in music was performing at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Julia's
favorite scripture was Psalms 91. She loved several songs, such as The Lord's prayer
and Eyes of the Sparrow. Julia went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January
4, 2020 in Mount Sinai Hospital of Brooklyn, New York.
She leaves to mourn, her caretaker and niece, Pastor Shirley Thomas (Deer Park,
NY), her nieces Elouise, Brenda, Sally, Margarete, Blanch and Francis. Her nephews
Robert, Melvin and Aubray. Julia is also mourned by a plethora of great nephews and
nieces. She is also mourned by one adopted spiritual son, who cared for her on her
final days, Mr. Samuel Lawrence, whom she loved with all her heart.
