Obituary for Elaine Maria Inniss

Print
Elaine Maria Johnson Inniss (known to all as Aunt Elaine) was born on December 19, 1927 in New York City to May Callendar and Jonathan Johnson. She was the eighth of nine children all of whom have predeceased her.

Elaine was instructed in a God fearing home where the importance and preeminence of the Word of God was taught. Elaine readily accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was disposed to whatever the will of the Lord was for her life.

Elaine completed all her formative studies and then graduated from Lincoln School for Nurses as a Registered Professional Nurse in 1949. She was employed at Lincoln Hospital as a Head Nurse of Obstetrics until her retirement in 1983 after 33 years of service.

Aunt Elaine married Rawle Inniss in 1969. They served the Lord and his people together both at the Assembly and their home. They could be liken to Aquila and Priscilla of old who took many into their home and expounded unto them the way of God more perfectly. Together these exercises were carried out until Bro Rawle Inniss went home to be with the Lord in October 1997.

Aunt Elaine also had ministries of her own which included the sending of greeting cards to ALL domestically and internationally both younger and older alike and for every occasion including births, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, Easter, Thanksgiving and shut-ins. This exercise sought to encourage the saints and it certainly assisted husbands who were reminded of their anniversary when Aunt Elaine’s card arrived.

Aunt Elaine worked with Brother’s Clarence Holloway and Brother Nathan Duncanson Sr during their years of service and assisted them in purchasing and food preparation for the July 4th conferences for many years.

Aunt Elaine in hearing and understanding the concerns with the neighborhood candy stores which would subject our young people to some kind of risk; sought counsel and quickly mobilized the Candy Store for over twenty years. Candy, chips and drinks were available in the lower level of the 527 building and therefore the young people would not leave the buildings on Sunday before Sunday School. Aunt Elaine was a problem solver.

She also quietly prepared the Sick List which is posted on our Assembly boards to remind ourselves to keep in contact with those who are sick and laid aside. This service assisted and reminded all to call or visit and assure the sick that that are not forgotten and that they were being prayed for.

Aunt Elaine worked intricately with the Vacation Bible School Staff and sisters Cynthia Mayhew (before her relocation to Florida)and Dawn Taitt to purchase food items for overly 30 years. As we all know, Aunt Elaine was not a last minute person and would take advantage of every sale to reduce spending so funds could be directed another way. In 2017, after a week of preparing and serving we saw the affects of a long week upon her however many times she encouraged us that time is short and children need to hear the basics that God so loved the world that he gave his Son. Last year she told many of us it would be her last Vacation Bible School and it was. However she joyfully purchased many items that she left in her home with notes that we used this past year.

Our dear sister received numerous recognition plaques and certificates for all these services that she rendered to the Lord from the Assembly, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and the Sister’s Tea Groups in appreciation for her cheerful, caring, humorous giving person. She was really delighted on Sunday, April 18th, 2018 when all the saints and generations surrounded her with good singing as she received a timely word of encouragement from the Scripture’s delivered by brother Tony which she was able to hold onto to the end.

In late May she suffered a stroke which affected her body but her faith never wavered in the Lord Jesus Christ and her interest concerning all the saints never ceased.

As an Assembly, we thank the Lord for Aunt Elaine, as a sister in the Lord who made a difference in each of our lives and for all her service.

Aunt Elaine you are so missed already but we bow to what God has done which is always best.

Our dear sister leaves to mourn Harriet (Pearson) Mills, Norma (Nathan) Duncanson, Kim Kevin, Kyle, Zepporah, Jennifer, Philip, a host of nephews and nieces; her childhood friends Sis. Myriam Mohan and family, Sis. Gladys Jackman and family and Sis. Frances Taitt and her family: Dawn, Othniel, Alexandria and Philip; and the Birkett Family.
