Obituary for Inez Salley
Inez Salley was born Christmas Day, 1925 to the late Wilhelmenia and Julius Salley in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She traveled to New York City at the age of 16 to reside in the borough of Brooklyn. Years later, at the age of 25, she would meet James Melvin, father of her children.
Inez, known by her friends as "Salley" was a stay at home Mom who took advantage of instilling many great values in her children. She was a believer of God, Sunday dinners, Prayers and Family Unity. She enjoyed cooking and there wasn't any food she didn't like. She was very verbal and didnt mind expressing what was on her mind. She would always say, “I will never be hungry...When I was coming up, you ate what was in front of you and liked it”.
Salley enjoyed the game show network. She sat in her recliner and watched her favorite shows - The Price is Right, Let's Make a Deal, Deal Or No Deal, and she loved to laugh at Steve Harvey on the Family Feud. She enjoyed playing Pokeno, Pitty Pat and Spades and spending leisure time with family, friends and neighbors.
Salley raised her children in Brownsville "On the Hill". When they were young adults she moved Downtown Brooklyn, where she livevd in Atlantic Terminals for 41 years. She loved the outdoors, she was adamant about going outside and getting sun and fresh air. She enjoyed her community family and seeing old friends.
She took the opportunity to instill values in the neighborhood children as she did her own- some of whom she babysat and cared for from birth. The community youth would never pass her without giving her a hug or shouting "Hey Mana" - a name given to her by Granddaughter Cherise. In the summers to come, Salley will be missed sitting on the bench, giving out Mary Janes, fruit cups and potato chips, and watching her Great Grandson Isaiah with her neighbors and her dearest friends Shirley Peterkin and Carolyn Porter.
Salley's family kept her abreast of the latest technology, music and current events. She was fascinated by Facetime on the cell phone. A monumental time in her life was her voting for and living during the time of the FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT. She was excited to be a part of that history. "Never thought I would see the day of a Black President".
Salley was home under the care and comfort of her family when she went to be with the Lord, whom she strongly believed in. She went peacefully in her sleep and will be reunited with her Son, the late Michael Salley.
She leaves to mourn:
1 sister Lorraine,
4 daughters: Gail (Ronald Ali), Barbara (Thomas), Joan (Michael) and Inez Jackson.
1 son: Anthony (Beatrice)
8 Grandchildren: Ronald, Cherise, Crystal Gilliam, Tamisha, Adrienne (Age), Cara, Brandon, and Tai Chunn - the only Grand who called her Grandma
8 Great Grand Children: Sharond, Dimitri, Kelli, Jamila, Daijha, Sharod, Jarod and Isaiah "Zay"
A host of Nieces, nephews, cousins, many many friends and the family pets.
