Obituary for Queen Esther Fleming
Mrs. Queen E. “Queenie” Simmons-Fleming was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, on
July 27, 1924, to the Late Ernest and Fannie Simmons. The Lord called her home on Friday, May
17, 2019, at 4:00 p.m., at Concord Nursing Home in Brooklyn, New York.
Queen was the first child of nine children in her family. She was educated in the
Orangeburg County School System. Upon completion of her education, she decided to make a
big move to Brooklyn, New York for a better life. After relocating to New York, she found
employment at a factory under a supervisor by the name of James Fleming. Shortly after working
at the factory, Queen and James began dating, fell in love and later, were joined in holy
matrimony.
Her proudest accomplishments were that of her children. God blessed to this union three
children and a step-daughter whom she loved and adored: Willie, Leon, Reana, and Colleen.
Queen enjoyed helping to raise her granddaughters Danyelle and Ronnie.
She joined Beulah Refuge in Christ Church in Brooklyn, New York and continued to serve
there until her health declined.
Queen always enjoyed being with her family, friends, spending time with her siblings and
cooking for them all. She was always willing to lend a helping hand. If there was anything she
could do to help you she would. When she wasn’t entertaining her family, Queen could be found
baking her famous fruit cake or playing cards. She loved both her family and her church family.
Her parents, husband, James Fleming; three brothers, Earnest Jr, Henry Clay, and Joseph
Simmons; two sisters, Gussie Mashack and Mary Walton; daughter-in-law, Mary Caldwell-
Simmons; a niece, Patricia Kelly and a nephew, Arthur Simmons, preceded her in death.
Queen was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister and, sister-in-
law. She leaves to treasure many warmhearted memories: one daughter, Reana Fleming; two
sons, Willie Simmons and Leon (Denise) Simmons; a step-daughter, Colleen Clark; one brother,
Theodore (Elise) Simmons; two sisters, Hattie Rice and Fannie Jackson; grandchildren: Rocky,
Roonie, Anthony, Lynette, Denise, Sarah, Justin, Tremayne, Keria, Danyelle and godson, James;
and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
