Obituary for Dorothy A Hosten

Dorothy Alberta Hosten Parker was born on September 13, 1944 to the late Percy Parker and Bessie Felton in a small town called Hertford, North Carolina. She was the youngest of seven siblings. Growing up, Dorothy loved protecting her brother Clifton and her cousin Skeet Sharpe. She was known as a tomboy and her nickname became “Tom”. Dorothy was very outspoken and always got her point across. For example, if someone tried to do something that was not legal, she would study her legal books and had keen knowledge of civil litigation and other laws that she used to help herself and others. Her favorite legal dictionary was called “Black’s Law Dictionary”. If there was a hobby she loved, it was law. Dorothy was also a very creative seamstress, who loved sewing. She would make her clothes, for friends and family; and was very talented in making custom coats and drapes.
Dorothy relocated to Brooklyn, New York at the age of 13 years old. Dorothy enjoyed talking about God, eternal life, heaven and hell. She enjoyed listening to her gospel music and preaching. She would say, “I ask my Holy Spirit, God and Jesus to help me through the blood of Jesus”. Her home church was Saunders Grove Baptist Church in Hertford, North Carolina.
Dorothy completed college and received her master’s degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York, N.Y. She worked for the City of New York Human Resource Administration until she retired.
Dorothy loved her family. She always encouraged her children and grandchildren to go to college and get an education. Overall, she was an encourager and enjoyed giving advice to others when needed.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers: William Parker, Clifton Parker; two sisters: Gladys Brooks and Erma Simmons.
Dorothy departed this world on Saturday, February 8, 2020 in Brooklyn, New York. Nevertheless, she was a strong, independent and honored as a woman of greatness.
Dorothy leaves to celebrate her life and memories of her loving children, her son, Anthony Lamonte Arrington, her two daughters, Sheila Renee Young and Erica Regenia Arrington: seven grandchildren, Nathaniel Maurice Young, Jonathan Emanuel Young, Shanera Elizabeth Arrington; Soriah Lynn Arrington, Tyrone Isaiah Young, Shaidey Alexis Arrington, Daniel Elijah Young, two great-grandchildren, Nathaniel O’Neal Young, Kalel Shaquille Young, her beloved brother: Melvin Parker, her beloved sister: Sybil Page and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and loved ones.
