Obituary for Irene Cummings

Remembering Irene …Devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, & Friend
Irene D. Cummings was born in Brooklyn, NY to the proud parents of Fred and Barbara King on June 13, 1953, the fifth child of six children.

As a lifelong New Yorker, Irene attended New York City public schools and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1971.

After a courtship, Irene met the love of her life, Orville Cummings, who she married on August 27, 1977. They lived in wedded bliss for close to 43 years. From that union, they had two children who they loved dearly, Verna and Anthony.

During her professional career, Irene worked at the Bank of New York Mellon and then transitioned to the Department of Sanitation, where she became truly passionate about the importance of properly recycling garbage. As time passed, Irene also became very involved in the 1182 Union and ultimately became a Union delegate.

Irene never met a stranger. She was kind to everyone she came into contact with. Irene touched so many people with her loving and giving spirit, there wasn’t a child or adult that met her that didn’t fall completely in love with her. She loved music and talking on the telephone. For her, family was everything and we continued to feel that love until the end.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her loving husband, Orville; daughter, Verna and son-in-law, John; grandchildren, Khaliyah and Jaylen; son, Anthony and future daughter-in-law, Kendra, granddaughter, Aya, niece, Adrienne, and a host of grandnephews, grandnieces, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Lillian, Fred Jr., William (“Butchie”), Rudolph (“Rudy”), and Theresa (“Terry”). Our loss is truly profound but we know that she is looking down on us smiling. We share some comfort knowing that she is resting peacefully with her parents and siblings.

Lovingly Submitted
