Obituary for Elaine B Sankar

Elaine was born Elaine Beatrice Cyrus in Georgetown Guyana July 23rd, 1914. She was 1 of
6 children born to her parents Peter and Catherine Cyrus. Her siblings are Gwendalyn,
Lucille, Grace, Samuel & Vera. When Elaine married her love Alfred Sankar, better known to
his friends as Sugar, her surname changed to Sankar and they parented their 7 children, 4
boys and 3 girls. In order of birth her children are Victor, Beulah, Archie, Joyce, Wilfred,
Neville and Bernice. She lived in Guyana until she migrated to Brooklyn, NY in 1972. There
she lived out her life getting to see her grandchildren grow. As they too grew families, she
found joy and peace in seeing the fruits of her labor multiply further.
Elaine was a free spirit, always proving that no one or nothing can keep her from doing
anything she put her mind to accomplishing. She took great pride in everything she did,
especially being a nurturer to all her family, which included her nieces and nephews. A
depiction of class, with a heart of pure love, Elaine believed in charity. Throughout her life, it
was her will to help anyone who needed it.
As the last Matriarch of her siblings, Elaine passed away on Sunday, January 10 th , 2021 after
living a long, healthy life amongst her family. She leaves behind, 4 generations, starting with
her remaining living children; Beulah Ford, Archie and Angela Sankar, Bernice Sankar, Joyce
Simon, Neville Sankar, Lloyd and Bernice King. Additionally, 28 grandchildren, 56 great
grandchildren and 10 great, great grandchildren. She also leaves behind 12 nieces and
nephews, along with numerous great nieces, great nephews, their respective families, other
dear relatives and friends.
She has joined in spirit both of her parents, her beloved husband, all 5 of her siblings, 2 of her
sons, Victor and Peter Sankar, 2 of her grandchildren, Dacia Bacchus and Peter Sankar Jr.,
as well as, 1 of her nieces, Pamela Odwin.
The light of Elaine’s spirit will be missed, but her memory and love will live within the hearts
and minds of her family forever.
