Six months prior to her 18th birthday she left North Carolina to begin the journey of many who migrated from the South to Northern States. In 1958, Laura married United States Marine Corp (served in Korea) Sergeant Enoch Lester Merriweather, Jr. (Preceded in Death - August 1, 2020) and were married for 10 years. This union produced three children.
Laura, who attended primary school until the fourth grade, wanted to further her education and in 1968, began a preparatory Adult Education course for taking the GED. After the passing the GED, she was one of the first 100 students admitted to CUNY / Medgar Evers College in 1971 and received a Bachelor of Science / Psychology degree (cum laude) in 1975. Subsequent to earning her BS, Laura entered Columbia University that same year and earned a Master’s Degree / Social Work in 1977 and became certified (CSW) and was a Board-Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. Laura began her career at Interfaith Medical Center (formerly known as St John’s Episcopal Hospital / Brooklyn Jewish Hospital), in 1978 and retired in 2000.
Laura, believing in “Tell the Truth and Shame the Devil,” modified how she presented the truth…she added a sweetener to remove the sting. As Aunt Joan has said on numerous occasions, “To know Laura is to love her.” Laura was genuinely devoted to her family / friends and, most importantly, her children, who were raised in the palm of her hand. Robin, Enid Lynne, and Eric have often been told by people that “We can tell you are children who were prayed over.” She worshipped God according to biblical teachings, and could sing the gospel with a pure heart, an expression of her love of the Lord. She had the ability to reach people with her genuine interest in them and was a lot of fun to be around. Laura had a good sense of humor and could see the value in making people laugh but prioritized laughter in herself.
Laura is survived by her children, Robin Teresa, Enid Lynne (“Penny”), and Eric Fitzgerald (“Ricky”).
