Obituary
Janet Antoinette Seale was born in Salisbury, North Carolina on January 17, 1943, to Edward (Pete) Davis and Maggie Lee Neely Davis. She was the oldest sibling to her brothers Michael Davis and Edward Davis Jr. (deceased), and her sister Phyllis Davis Stinson. Janet and her siblings grew up in church and in a Christian home learning about God. At an early age Janet knew God and the importance of having a relationship with Him.
Janet and her siblings were educated in Salisbury, North Carolina and in 1961 she graduated from Price High School. After graduating from high school, she moved to New York to live in Long Island with her Aunt Janet, where she worked at Bellevue Hospital. She later moved to Harlem, New York. In 1964, she married Winston Elcock at Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Harlem, where she was also a member. From that union they had a daughter, Carmen Elcock.
In the late 1960’s, she met Winslow R. Seale Sr. They married on February 9, 1969 in New Haven Connecticut. Winslow and Janet lived on Eastern Parkway for more than 50 years and are the parents of two children, Cynthia and Edwin (Eddie). Winslow and Janet blended their families and saw themselves as the proud parents of four children, Winslow Jr. (Johari), Carmen, Cynthia and Eddie. Janet had an interest in advancing her education and enrolled at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York. In addition to attending college, she worked in healthcare as a nurse’s assistant, in banking for various national banks, and in later years moved on to customer service at Lord & Taylor and Macy’s before retiring.
Janet loved to travel, especially to Trinidad and Barbados. She enjoyed shopping and listening to music. Two of her favorite singers were Luther Vandross and Lionel Richie. She also loved to dance and enjoyed attending The Combermere Alumni Association dinner dances, in New York, where you could always find her on the dance floor dancing to the latest calypsos.
Janet was affectionately known as Jan by her siblings, Ma, Aunt Janet, Grandma Janet, or Momma J by her children, grandchildren, family, and close friends. She was also a great cook who loved to cook for her family, friends, and co-workers. You could always count on Janet to be the person cooking for special occasions or office parties. She was known for hosting cookouts on Eastern Parkway and at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park for her family and their friends from “the block”. She also loved to watch the news, especially the weather and as a result was given the nickname “Storm Seale” because she could tell you the weather wherever you lived. “Ma” was a supportive and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved spending time with “Win”, her husband, and her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she shared that with everyone.
To her family and friends, she will always be remembered as a kind, caring, funny and thoughtful person. A person who loved to dream about places she would like to go and things she wanted to accomplish. She was always a very positive and pleasant person who constantly thought of how she could give or help other people. As an example, in 2000, Janet was diagnosed with breast cancer. After treatment, strong faith, prayers, positive attitude and support she became a breast cancer survivor. In support of breast cancer education, she thought it was important to participate in various breast cancer awareness events. May her positive, kind, and loving spirit live in all of us.
Janet leaves a legacy of love, kindness and wonderful family memories that will be cherished by her loving husband of 52 years, Winslow R Seale Sr., and their children, Winslow Johari Seale Jr, daughter-in-law Nia Seale of Silver Springs, Maryland, Carmen Elcock Seale of Brooklyn, New York, Cynthia Seale of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Edwin “Eddie” Seale of Brooklyn, New York, God-daughter Maurisha Bishop Salmon of Jacksonville, Florida, her thirteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and soon to be tenth great grandchild; her loving siblings, sister Phyllis Davis Stinson, brother-in-law Robert Bobby Stinson of Marietta, Georgia, brother Michael Davis of Salisbury, North Carolina, and her sisters-in-law Marcia Seale of Poughkeepsie, New York, Grace Seale Edghill and brother-in-law Arthur Edghill of Deltona Florida; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, best friend Sonya Wells, close friends and many other relatives.
