OBITUARY: Violet Eldica Marks [ Sunrise 11-27-2023 / Sunset 05-25-2023]

Violet Eldica Marks nee Violet Eldica Loncke a/ka Auntie Vi/ Viola /Dodo was born

on November 27th, 1936 to William Murray and Iris Loncke in Skeldon,

Corentyne, Guyana. Her other siblings are Vincent Loncke, Beryl Lambert and Jean

Williams.

In her late teenage years, she taught Sunday school, and later was employed in

the Skeldon Estate Compound at the Manager’s home. She was their General

Domestic Worker. Violet worked daily except Sundays, for long hours cooking,

cleaning, laundering and even babysitting. She provided quality care for the

manager and his family.

Violet loved her job and did it exceptionally well. “all good things, come to an end

at some time”.

Her employers were unhappy, when she met and fell in love with her suitor,

Clement Bernard Eric Marks who worked at the estate as a Cane Hoist Operator.

He wrote to her mother, asking for her hand in marriage, and it was approved.

On November 27 th , 1954. Violet Eldica Loncke became Violet Eldica Marks.

Domestic workers have always been skilled professionals at a job that can be

physically & emotionally demanding. She quit her job and concentrated on her

new role in the home.

She was blessed to be a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt to

many.

Violet was the second child for her mother and the first born for her father. She

gave birth to [8] eight children: Viviette, Carol, Bernard, Naomi, Milton, Stephen,

Moses and Josephine Marks.

She loved her children and was very industrious at home, with her small business;

selling custard blocks, guavas [from her backyard] and coals. She spent lots of

time on her Singers sewing machine, sewing beautiful dresses and skirts for her

daughters.

She spent memorable moments with her grandchildren: Glen Anthony Stuart,

Carolyn Stuart Paul and Shellon Stuart; Bernard Marks Jnr. and one other.

Her two granddaughters revealed over time, happy memories she shared with

them. In the absence their mom, Violet would go and buy her favorite snacks

{peanuts, sesame bars, ice cream and cheese straws}. She loved Chicken-in-the-

ruff & chips and lots of dessert.

The entire family looked forward to Friday evenings, it was pay day at Skeldon

Estate for her husband Clement Marks. He came home with all the goodies that

Violet and the children loved, and it was family time; he played his LPs on his

record player: Jim Reeves, Mario Lanza and many West Indian Calypsos especially

from the Mighty Sparrow and she totally enjoyed this.

It was a joyous time when the Lord added great grandchildren to the family:

Hakeem and Hamani Paul; Emily, Chelsea and Alex Stuart.

Violet was blessed to be the God mother of one very faithful God child: Hazel

Scott, whom she cherished dearly.

Violet travels started in Guyana, from Skeldon to New Amsterdam, most of the

time to purchase a rocking chair which she always replaced as soon as one gets

broken. It extended to her residing in Botswana for 4 years with her daughter

Carol and granddaughter Shellon. Travels took her to Zimbabwe on numerous

weekends before she returned to the United States and was reunited with her

daughters Viviette, Naomi and Josephine. She lived with her daughter Naomi here

in NY until she died.

Violet was preceded in death by her husband Clement Marks; sons Moses and

Bernard Marks; mother and fathers Iris and Francis Loncke and William Murray;

Sister Beryl Handy Lambert and numerous in-laws.

She is survived by her only brother Vincent Loncke, sister Jean Williams, sisters-in-

law Carmen, Muriel Glasgow, Noreen Sturgeon and Brenda Loncke and brother-

in-law Dennis Marks. Numerous great nieces and nephews.

Violet Eldica Marks made peace with God and is rejoicing with the angels singing

“Glory Hallelulia!”
