Lisa's Life
The Life of Lisa S. Dozier
“Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” When God appoints a person to a specific task or life calling, He provides the resources for success. At a very early age, I knew my calling. When family and friends would ask what I was going to become when I grew-up, I told them without hesitation “A Mortician”. Growing up in the projects of East New York Brooklyn, made my dreams seem quite unrealistic. It was unheard of; a young African American female mortician? Throughout my high school years, I flirted with the idea of other careers; but none of them ever kept my interest. After graduating from Washington Irving High School in 1989 I enrolled in a community college here in New York majoring in liberal arts. After attending Kingsboro Community College for a year, my curiosity grew stronger for mortuary science. I felt like I was wasting time; so I made a conscious decision to discontinue my education at Kingsboro in 1990.
Time was beginning to just pass me by. It was just eating away at my hopes, feeding off my buried ambition. It was time to build my future and plan my life. I was determined to speak my childhood dream into fruition. In 1994, I enrolled in The American Academy of McAllister Institute for Funeral Service (#1 school in the country for that trade.) Although I had no family affiliations, I knew that I would overcome the odds. I completed the course as an honors student passing all of the required State and National Board exams. After 10 years of working for other funeral homes, I decided in 2005 to go out on my own. That decision birthed what is now known as Lisa S. Dozier Funeral Service, Inc.
Here we are 23 years later, still a licensed funeral director of New York. I have added an array of services and specializations to my credentials. I have on staff highly trained embalmers and restorative art technicians. We specialize in national as well as international shipping of human remains to all parts of the world; Trinidad, Barbados, Africa, Panama, Guyana, Haiti and the Carolinas to name a few. Over the years, I’ve held in high regards the families that have entrusted me with the care of their loved ones and the professional as well as customized care will remain my number one priority!
